How to choose a rug for your home?
Rugs are an essential part of interior decoration and represent the final word in the decoration of a house or a flat.
The pleasantness of an environment depends on the harmony of all the details of the interior and there are a few ways to create such an environment – one of them is by choosing a rug which will make it feel complete, warm and pleasant to be in.
Tips for buying rugs are always welcome!

Modern or classic rug?

We can divide rugs into two general categories: modern and classic.
The choice of rug design depends on the style of your interior, the purpose and size of the room, as well as on the impression you want to make with it.
Modern rugs go with contemporary interiors. Rugs with modern design are with subdued colours, of simple geometric shapes and combine perfectly with simple and minimalistic interiors. The most dominant colours are white, black and beige, with possible combinations with some richer colours.
Classic rugs can first and foremost combine with most traditional environments, and fit in perfectly in spaces with a multitude of styles combined together. A rug with classic design can sometimes leave a strong impression even in a simple, modern interior. You will easily recognise rugs with classic designs and their modern interpretations by a multitude of patterns and different motifs, usually floral and oriental, as well as by a variety of colours used. When you use these rugs in an interior space, you must make sure that they do not stand out too much from everything that is in it.
Diverse colour palette
In order for a space to be an integrated whole, the colours of the rug should go with the colours of the floors, walls or wallpapers, furniture and decorative textile.
Of course, this does not necessarily mean that all these elements should be of identical colour, but you should aim to achieve a certain degree of harmony and connection between individual elements. Also, if the interior is simple and minimalistic, a colourful rug can help you highlight the space in an ideal way.
Rugs with light tones further open up the space and make it seem significantly more spacious, while rugs with darker shades help to create a sense of elegance and comfort. The choice of suitable colours for the rug will depend on the impression you want to make in your home. As long as you pay attention to colour harmony, you can put more than one rug in the same room.

In order not to make a mistake when choosing colours, use the colour wheel, a tool used by all interior designers.

If you do not like making strong colour contrasts, use different shades of the same tone of colour. Of course, these tones can easily be combined with neutral colours, such as white, black, grey and beige.

To create a dynamic interior, choose colours which are opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as, for example, blue and yellow, red and green, violet and yellow, etc. When using certain stronger and more aggressive tones, be careful when fitting them into the rest of the interior.

Minimalist interiors are distinguished by a monochromatic colour palette, in which only black and white tones combined with various shades of grey largely prevail. This is a colour combination you can surely not go wrong with when it comes to the choice of colours for your rug.
Choose rugs of different shapes
The shape of a rug affects the overall impression of the room, and depending on your needs, you can choose between several options. The shape of the rug that will suit your space will to a large extent be dictated by the furniture layout. You will most surely put a rectangular rug under a rectangular dining room table, while round rugs should typically be chosen for spaces which already have some round elements in them.
Some of the shapes we see most frequently are:
• Round rugs, which make rectangular rooms look softer and feel warmer, which is why they are a popular choice for children’s rooms. They also fit in perfectly in dining rooms with round tables, in entrance halls, if we want to have a separate minizone for sitting and so on.
• Oval rugs are a good choice for dining rooms, as well as for areas in front of the fireplace in living rooms. Classic rugs are typically oval, with oriental and floral motifs and nowadays they are usually found in interiors which are decorated in the classic style.
• Carpet runners are often bought as an accompanying element together with a rug with similar design, but they can also be elegant additions to bedrooms when placed next to the bed or as a separate rug in corridors.
• Rectangular and square rugs are the most frequent shapes nowadays because they fit very easily in all types of interiors and functional layouts of the space itself.

Rug size
The choice of rug size for a particular space will to a large extent be determined by the size of the space itself, its shape, as well as the layout and position of all the elements in the space.
When you are making a decision on size, bear in mind these few basic rules in order to create harmony in your interior.
Spacious bedrooms, living rooms or kitchens look best with large rugs, while corridors or smaller kitchens look better with smaller sized rugs. If the space allows it, you can combine two rugs in order to highlight visually particular segments or to divide the space in two separate areas – this is something you are most likely to find in open space interiors in which the dining room and the living room are actually one room that you can then divide visually using two rugs. They can be two separate elements (rugs of different sizes or colours) or two identical elements.
Pay particular attention to the fact that the rug does not have to and should not cover most of the floor, but that uncovered areas are more than welcome. The opposite is also true, make sure you do not choose a rug which is too small for the spatial composition as a whole, because the lack of harmony is going to be seen clearly.
