VATRA Urban Regeneration Project
2022 | Bucharest, Romania

VATRA is a highly awarded urban regeneration prototype module, located inside EFdeN Sustainable City in Bucharest, and is the latest sustainable housing prototype, presented at Solar Decathlon Europe by the EFdeN team.
Winner of 1st place – People’s Choice, in the contest, VATRA is also an outstanding example of informal education initiatives, that proves collaboration between Universities, private initiatives and active sustainability-oriented communities can grow and thrive together, generating remarkable projects. Suported by leading universities like: “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning , Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, University Politehnica of Bucharest, National University of Political Studies and Public Administration, Vatra’s team aimed to create an example of sustainability in construction and housing environment, by providing an affordable housing model that empowers single-living people by forming a community of sustainability in construction and housing environment.
Designed to be easily constructed and adaptable to various urban scenarios, VATRA aims to create a model that fosters community among single-living individuals and provides affordable, flexible, and adaptable modules for highly dense urban areas, without compromising on living quality. The design includes three typological modules for single-person households along with a private greenhouse module, encouraging personal food production and strengthening the connection between residents and nature.
At the heart of this initiative is EFdeN, a leading Romanian educational NGO dedicated to promoting sustainability among students, young professionals, and the general public. Since its inception in 2013, EFdeN has focused on urban regeneration through energy-efficient architecture. By engaging over 600 volunteers across more than 10 projects, including participation in international competitions Solar Decathlon Europe and Middle East, EFdeN has established itself as a vital resource for informal education on sustainability.
